March 10, 2000 — Socialists from the “Democratic Republic of Dillingham” were causing havoc in the “country of Alaska” once again on Thursday.

The socialists had taken over two buildings and threatened to halt the flow of oil down a pipeline to the “Republic of Juneau.” U.S. troops were called upon to save two buildings in the “Republic of Anwar” and neutralize the threat.

25 YEARS AGO

March 10, 1985 — Officials say former state Rep. Vern Hurlbert owes more than $13,000 for moving unauthorized materials at state expense, but the Sleetmute Democrat says he was told in advance he could charge the cost to the state.

When Hurlbert made his final trip home from Juneau, he took along building materials including lumber, insulation, a bath tub and a 500-gallon tank.

50 YEARS AGO

March 10, 1960 — House members today were preparing for a full dress debate on a number of local government issues tomorrow. Among the bills scheduled for consideration was one introduced yesterday to provide for unorganized borough government.

75 YEARS AGO

March 10, 1935 — Thomas W. Hunt, 30 years old, clerk in the Fairbanks post office, was found dead this afternoon as the result of a bullet wound in the garage of his home on Fifth Avenue between Bonnifield and Cleary streets. His demise is attributed to suicide.

100 YEARS AGO

March 10, 1910 — A couple of days ago, the News-Miner suggested to the people of First Avenue that it would be a good idea to clean the snow and ice from the walks in front of their houses, and that the work should be finished by last night. The way people responded to the call was good indeed.
