Mattson led West Valley to victories over Houston and North Pole to propel the Wolfpack into the Class 4A state tournament on March 15-17 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.
Streeter played a key role in the Malemutes’ victories over West Valley and Saturday’s upset win against North Pole to put Lathrop in the state championships.
West Valley girls coach Steve Caciari and Houston boys coach David Porter earned Coach of the Year honors.
In addition to Mattson, girls all-tournament honors went to West Valley’s Jasmine Yarde and Megan Hinzman, North Pole’s Reagan Smothers, Meghan McKinnell and Sydney McIntosh, Lathrop’s Ja’Nae Anderson and Whitney Basinger and Houston’s Amber Acton.
The girls MAC all-conference team for play during the entire season includes West Valley’s Mattson, Yarde and Julia Mackey, North Pole’s Josie Broderick, Reagan Smothers and Cheyenne Smothers, Houston’s Acton and Lathrop’s Sierra Luke.
Joining Streeter on the boys all-tournament team were Lathrop’s Andrew Holland and Keith Mays, North Pole’s Kody Broderick, Luke Demientieff and Jesse Ward, West Valley’s Hayden McKenzie and Luke Carson and Houston’s Zach Qual.
Two players from each team were named to the all-conference team — North Pole’s Ward and Roland Barbaza, Houston’s Qual and Max Rothley, Lathrop’s Streeter and Mays, and West Valley’s Carson and Willie Clark.
Aurora
Players and coaches from the regular season and Aurora Conference Tournament champion Glennallen Panthers captured top conference honors during the awards ceremony following Saturday night’s games at West Valley High School.
Jubilee Sutherland garnered girls Most Valuable Player honors, while Panthers coach Kirk Howard collected the Coach of the Year award.
On the boys side, Josh Lorence received the Most Valuable Player award, while his father Jim Lorence was named Coach of the Year.
Other players on the girls all-conference team were Glennallen’s Rachel Stumpf and Sydnee Falkner, Monroe Catholic’s Demi Obermeyer and Alicia Mendez, Hutchison’s Mimi Wood and Echo Winfrey, Valdez’s Caitlin Auble and Kelsey Lematta, Galena’s Jenna Buchanan, Eielson’s Kacie Croxin and Delta Junction’s Anna Byam.
The girls good sport team members were Courtney Freel of Eielson Diana Linnik of Delta Junction, Patti Sam of Galena, Sutherland of Glennallen, Sammie Poeschel of Hutchison, Isabella Evans of Monroe Catholic and Courtney Knowles of Valdez.
Joining Josh Lorence on the boys all-conference were Glennallen’s John Goodwin and Cody Parmenter, Galena’s Dudio Burgett, Wayne Holmberg and John Kavairlook, Monroe Catholic’s Jon Sniegowski and Shayne Gilbertson, Eielson’s Mike Keener and Devante Sparrow, Hutchison’s Keenen Mays and Kevin Rima and Delta’s Andrey Kolesnik.
The boys good sport team consisted of Austin Brophy of Eielson, Jonathan Kimble of Delta, Richard Sommer of Galena Jericho Green of Glennallen, Terrance Sommer of Hutchison, James Holmes of Monroe Catholic and George Keeney of Valdez.
Golden Heart
Fort Yukon’s Roland James and Kandace Carroll were named the most valuable players of the Central Interior Conference Tournament after the Eagles won the boys and girls titles at Monroe Catholic’s Boileau Hall.
Carroll led Fort Yukon to three wins on Saturday as the Eagles came out of the losers’ bracket to claim the crown. Joining Carroll on the all-tournament team were her teammates Chasity Herbert and Angie Herbert Tanana’s Teniesha Roberts and Brittannee Erhart, Minto’s Beth Alexander, Megan Smith and Laprenza Frank and Huslia’s Darlene Sam, Erica Ambrose and Barbie Sam.
James led the Fort Yukon to four straight wins in the boys tournament. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Cody Cadzow and Jared Peter, Minto’s Joseph Alexander and Dallas Charlie, Kaltag’s Albert Nickoli and Shawn Benjamin, Huslia’s Eddie Sam and Chris Moses and Nulato’s William Sims and Gabe Pitka.
Nulato won the boys sportsmanship award, and Fort Yukon earned the girls sportsmanship trophy..
