Cizmowski sparks Tri-Valley to small schools hockey tournament

FAIRBANKS — Led by Greatland Conference Most Valuable Player Kaz Cizmowski, the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors advanced to the small schools state hockey tournament with a 9-0 win against the Su-Valley Rams on Friday night at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

In addition to Tri-Valley, Delta Junction and Monroe Catholic earned trips to the Greatland State Championships later this week in Wasilla. Hutchison, winner of the regular season championship, completes the four-team field.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla. Hutchison plays Monroe Catholic in one semifinal contest, while Tri-Valley goes up against Delta Junction in the other semifinal.

Cizmowski scored four goals to lead the Vikings Warriors’ against Su-Valley. Sterling Shreeve added a goal and five assists to the winning effort. Evan Venechuk chipped in three goals and dished out a pair of assists. Alex Matielli scored the other Tri-Valley goal and Bailey Brewer chalked up three assists. David Townsend and Jess Arbuckle also had assists.

Goaltender Dakota Maciver stopped 11 shots in posting the shutout.

Hutchison went through the regular season with a 12-0 record, with coach Dave Teets earning Coach of the Year honors. Hutchison players on the all-conference team were Drew Baggen, Doran Masters and John Teets.

In addition to Cizmowski, Tri-Valley’s only other all-conference selection was Maciver.

The remainder of the team included Su-Valley’s Corey Ambrose, Delta’s Eli Erickson and Eathon Gebauer Monroe Catholic’s James Duncan and Tyler Holmes, Kenny Lake’s David Helkenn and Tok’s Kyle Brinkman.

Ok, I know the venue was decided months if not a year ago, but isn't it strange to have this tournament in Wasilla when ALL four teams are from the interior? The teams all have to travel 5-6 hours just to get to Wasilla (except Tri-Valley, which has to travel 3 hours) whereas if it was held in Fairbanks - the longest travel time would be 2 hours. Change the venue so that family and friends can attend the games and cheer on their teams!
