FAIRBANKS — The Tri-Valley boys and Seldovia girls came away with the Nenana Invitational Tournament high school basketball championship trophies on Saturday night.

Tri-Valley pulled ahead in the second quarter and never looked in notching a 50-32 win against Nikolaevsk in the boys title contest, while the Seldovia girls started slow, then came on strong to claim a 51-27 victory.

Ironically, the Most Valuable Player awards did not go to members of the championship team.

Nikolaevsk’s Christopher Kalugin earned the boys MVP award, while Fort Yukon’s Kandace Carroll captured the girls top honor.

Players selected to the boys all-tournament team were Tri-Valley brothers Andrew and Jonathan Talerico, Su-Valley’s Bill Kelly and Pason Mathews, Nenana’s Tim Standifer, Tok’s Kane Young, Fort Yukon’s Roland James and Effie Kokrine’s Leo Huntington.

Seldovia’s Courtney Collier and Sarah Geagel topped the girls all-tournament selections that included Nenana’s Hayley Tyler, Tok’s Tori Cronk, Huslia’s Danielle Ballard-Huffman and Erica Ambrose, Tri-Valley’s Windy Gore, Effie Kokrine’s Shannon Hoskin and Su-Valley’s Sierra Pedersen.

The Seldovia girls trailed Huslia 16-11 after the first quarter, but the Huslers got in foul trouble and Seldovia took full advantage to take control of the game.

The Sea Otters outscored Huslia 19-6 in the second quarter and 10-0 in the third to gain the upper hand.

Geagel poured in 21 points for Seldovia, while Collier had 15 and Sarah O’Leary tacked on 14. Darlene Sam led Huslia with 10 points and Ballard-Huffman had nine. Two of Huslia’s seven players fouled out of the game.

Kalugin was the only Nikolaevsk player in double figures with 12 points.
