Gravel on the roads by Zippo
In the past month Ive had 2 windsheilds broken here in Fairbanks.. Ive heard Fairbanks is the broken windshield capital of the world, probably the chipped paint capital as well. With the cost of vehicles now its no laughing matter. The idiocracy of graveling the roads needs to stop. Ever hear of "Sanding the roads"??? How about driving as fit for weather conditions, with proper tires??? Ignorance should not be the justification works for putting "rocks" on the roads. It would be better off without them, they just wind up piled off to the side of the road in a short while anyhow waiting for the next numbskull to drive threw them and spray them around onto the surrounding traffic. A vote of the public for the use of sand should be enacted even if we need to truck it up from the Kenai pennisula. It would save the citzens up here thousands over time, and in these times thats saying alot. If graveling continues, how about passing legislation for the city to buy your new windshild for you?

I don’t much like the gravel, either.  I’ll be replacing my windshield again after breakup – 3rd one in 3 years.  I don’t know what the solution would be, however.  Salt doesn’t work well at extreme temperatures, sand the same, and sno-melt?  Laughable.  If there were a reasonable, cost-effective method, I’d be happy to lobby for it!

I find the gravel helps with taigaters.

When someone is tailgating I simply “drift” to the side of the road, gravel is picked up and dispursed.

Tailgaters tend to BACK OFF

This method is only used when passing is an option, yet they stay on your a@# anyway.

Over the past few years I have contacted my State Senator, my State Representative, and the Governor and the answer I get is the local DOT is decision maker on the gravel. They said they do it because they can. I believe the glass shops are paying someone.
Sand is used in Nenana, Delta, and Valdez. Fairbanks seems to just love gravel. I would gladly take part in a class action lawsuit against the State on this. My vehicles look like they have been shot with a shotgun all due to this insane gravel being spread on the streets.
How about this: Use sand mixed with coal ash from the local power plants. None of the particles are big enough to damage paint or glass and the ash is gritty and gets into the ice better and is basically free.
