FAIRBANKS — Three people have applied for a vacancy on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly as the Dec. 1 deadline approaches.

The applicants are Diane Hutchison, Karl Kassel and Glenn Shaw.

Hutchison, an accountant, was the director of the Fairbanks office of former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens. Her husband, Garry, served on the Borough Assembly and ran unsuccessfully for borough mayor. Kassel is a former borough parks and recreation director who ran for the Legislature in 2008 and lost by four votes. Shaw is a landlord of 15 rental units, served in the U.S. Army and regularly attends Borough Assembly meetings.

Candidates wishing to fill the vacancy, created when Luke Hopkins was elected mayor, must apply by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Applications are available at the borough administrative center and online at www.co.fairbanks.ak.us/.

Hopefuls must type a Statement of Interest, one page, double-spaced, and fill out a financial disclosure statement. A Statement of Interest is an explanation of why the candidate wants the position.

Assembly members can nominate two candidates from the application pool. Interviews will take place Dec. 15 before the assembly selects the new member, who will be sworn in immediately.

Thirteen people applied when the assembly last had a vacancy two years ago.
