My column Sunday is about the celebration of life held for Juanita Helms at the Pioneer Park civic center Thursday.

She wanted a 10-minute service to be followed by card games and fun. Part of her wishes were honored.

During his tribute, her brother, Elstun Lauesen, a former Fairbanksan now living in Anchorage, gave a great example of her sense of humor.

About 20 years ago, Charlie Parr, the son of the late legislator, was talking with Juanita and Elstun about various things and  they touched on how much Elstun had managed to annoy Juanita during her younger days.

Trying to keep the conversation flowing, Charlie said it was probably something like the song, "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

Juanita paused for as long as necessary, took the full measure of the brother standing next to her and said: "Let's just say, he's my brother."

We Alaskans are very fortunate indeed to have had such wisdom and guidance.

A truly significant and beautiful woman from a wonderful family.

We truly have a new star in our northern skies.
