JUNEAU, Alaska - Mudslides that followed heavy rains have forced the evacuation of some Juneau homes and apartments.

Police blocked off downtown streets and went door to door Saturday morning to warn residents of the danger and assist them to an emergency shelter.

No injuries were reported. The slide caused a brief power outage and damaged one residence along with two vehicles, including an SUV that was totaled.

Capital City Fire Rescue Chief Eric Mohrmann said that shortly after the first mudslide occurred at 7 a.m., witnesses heard a second slide south of the neighborhood.

He said no structures were threatened by that slide, but it shows the hillside is still unstable.

American Red Cross officials said up to 50 people had come through the shelter by noon on Saturday.
