FAIRBANKS — An annual Thanksgiving dinner that served more than 300 seniors per year has been canceled.

The Elders Thanksgiving Dinner has given a free feast to Fairbanks seniors for the past eight years. Usually hosted several days before the holiday, it was paid for and coordinated by the Bentley Mall Safeway and the Westmark Hotel.

Alma Rider, secretary of Santa’s Senior Center, said the cancellation changed the center’s plans for the holidays, but she and others aren’t anywhere near upset about it.

“When they’ve had three- to four-hundred people there, that’s a big thing,” she said. “... Most of us have a place to go on Thanksgiving, and (the Elders’ Dinner) is the week before.”

Safeway store manager Rick Searles said volunteers couldn’t devote enough time this year to put on the event. Preparations for the dinner usually start in July.

The Fairbanks-area isn’t lacking in Thanksgiving get-togethers.

Others include a free Thanksgiving buffet at noon Nov. 25 at the North Star Center for Aging, though the event will only have the capacity to serve fewer than 50 people. Salcha’s Neighborly Organization will host a community potluck at 2 p.m. Nov. 26 at 8678 Richardson Highway.

Hey wait-for-it... read again. there are many of us who would love to and still can give our time and service. If the information was given in a timely manor by those who didnt have the time to volenteer this could have been taken care of earlier. Instead the last minute scramble will be done for There are too many of us who love our elders and want the best we CAN give to and for them. Get the information out to the people. Like where to meet and what is needed and it will happen. There is still faith left in this world for some of us.

Doesn't sound as if any of you that are complaining have volunteered to help at the senior's dinner in the past, sounds like you just like to complain about what others aren't doing. Seems to me that Safeway was willing to do their part by donating the food, why should they do it all? Get your butts out there and do something besides complain.

I find it extremely sad that Safeway is using the excuse of "volunteers couldn't devote enough time this year" if you couldn't get the volunteers needed use paid employees. Safeway takes enough from this community they need to give back and this was a nice way of doing so. The seniors in this community look forward to this event, many of them don't get out for any other events all year. The community needs to respect the senior population many of them were instrumental in building this town. I agree with Tirips why are we just hearing about the cancellation now, when it is to late for many seniors to find another celebration. Shame on you Safeway.

Sorry my last post should have said.

DNM should run an article informing the public.

My old fingers are dyslectic today.

A month ago i called the food bank to see what the wife and i had to do or how to go about volunteering at any of the Thanksgivings dinners.

They had no idea. (where, who, or when)

In the future if the DNS good run a small article informing the public about such events would be very helpful. Unless the did and i just happened to miss it.

I find it hard to understand how the DNM would make a statemnt like - "no problem" using a voice from an organization representing such a small number of seniors - North Pole. Being a provider for seniors, I had no idea that this was coming down. If folks would have brought the problem to any member of the sneior coalition, it would have been handled. If preparations usually start in July, why the news now, two weeks before the event? Many of our `locked' in seniors really look forward to a little socilization around the holidays. I know my cliens have been talking about it. We are quickly forgetting that Fairbanks is not just an entity, it is THE PEOPLE.

Did these people ever think to bring it to the public? And maybe hope for a response of aide and donations from say maybe "neighbors and friends" or just humans with some values left who still believe in sharing. This is the first I have heard of this and would have been more than happy to volenteer my time and services for Something to believe in. HUH, What a concept knowing and sharing with neighbors for thanksgiving....

Seems like folks are losing interest in a lot of good things these days.Is it that volunteers couldn't devote enough time or that sponsors dropped the ball? Maybe a lack of community leadership? Just wondering how something as big as feeding four hundred meals is just cancelled. WALA...
