FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks police apparently were dogged in their pursuit of a burgled beagle that went missing Monday from the Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter.

Staff noticed Freddie the beagle was missing Monday afternoon and a review of a video showed a woman driving off with the dog during business hours, according to Fairbanks police logs. The video showed a woman with three children in a Toyota sedan driving to the shelter, where a girl who looked to be about 16 years old got out and took the dog out of one of the building’s windows.

The theft still is under investigation, but borough animal control officer Sandy Besser said Fairbanks police were able to locate Freddie and returned him Wednesday. He is happy and healthy, and Friday afternoon a family adopted him through legitimate means, she said.

There was no evidence shelter staff assisted in the heist, she said. It has not been decided if charges will be pressed for the theft of the dog.

The animal shelter always is looking for people to adopt pets but asks that new owners pay an adoption fee, she said.

In Freddie’s case, he already had been vaccinated and the adoption fee was $90, she said.

Besser said she only knew of one other case of someone trying to walk away from the shelter with a pet — a woman once tried to hide a small dog in her purse.

Yes, alaskagrl, there is more to this story than being reported here. I don't see how this could have happened without someone helping her. I hope the detectives try a little harder to find out why this is happening.

This shelter needs some serious help. We adopted a chihuahua from there back in '07. We brought her back a few days later when we found out that our daughter was allergic and they said we would receive a refund for our adoption fee. When the four week period was over and we still hadn't received the check, I called and was told the dog was stolen the night we brought her back, and therefor delayed getting a refund because they thought we did it!! I was more than frustrated, and it took someone coming to our home and talking to our neighbors to prove that we didn't have the dog any were due the refund! So frustrating! I'm glad Freddie was okay, but they REALLY need to consider looking into avoiding situations like this in the future! This has been going on almost 5 years!!!!

It is also possible the shelter wouldn't let these people adopt an animal for some reason - could not financially take care of it, they had reports against them for poor animal care, etc. I know a family that sounds a lot like this one with pets that roam the streets, chase walkers, bicyclists, and cars, and the woman lets her young children roam the streets as well. As for who is going to take care of her children, perhaps there is someone who would teach them not to steal? Lots of women with children are in prison and should have thought of that when they committed a crime.

alaskagrl, I'm a "softy" too, particularly where animals are concerned, but not when thieves are concerned and "mommies" don't deserve special privileges. How are children supposed to learn not to steal and do what is right when there are exceptions given for everything? Yes, a fine is in order, not jail time, but charge her all the same. If they couldn't afford the adoption fee, then they certainly can't afford to have the dog. The shelter needs those fees to stay in operation. The whole situation sounds fishy to me anyway. Just where is a window where a little beagle is visible to the public? Why is a window able to be opened or unlocked in winter temps? How did she know the beagle would be in the window? Stealing is stealing and now those kids see there are little if any consequences when they decide to do the same. What if they drove by your house and stole your dog? I have had a cat and a dog stolen in the past and know who did it but nothing happened to them.

I can see your frustration if your own animals were stolen. That would be traumatic. You reminded me of years ago when my beagle was stolen back in 1983. We actually found her in the person's yard. She was covered in mud. We confronted the man who lived there and he played like he didn't know she was in the yard. It was her howling that led us right to her. My dad just walked over and took her back, and that was the end of it. I was a kid and I remember asking my dad, "is that all you're gonna do? You should punch him or something." We just lef

I was wondering about the window too. I can't recall windows leading to the dogs.

I get it.

A dog that needed a home was stolen (given a home) then OUR money paid for someone to go find it. Then it got another home.

I am so glad every other crime in the city has been solved.

Props.

No, MAD PROPS!!!

If you think this woman was going to provide a proper "home" for anything, you are out of your mind. Theft is theft.

IF this was the case as Lady NYC mentions below the NM should investigate and print that fact. As for the court system in FB being corrupt I agree 100% but yes the Shelter should prosecute. People need to learn that there will be consequences for stealing. These children need an example here. Petty theft is all too common here and some see nothing wrong with it. As for the beagle, I am happy it got a new home.

I'm glad that cute little beagle got a home too. I grew up with a beagle. We had the best times together.

I hear what you're saying, that there should be consequences, but, just not this time. I don't want to see a mommy in jail. Who will take care of her kids? If they persue a fine, they should wait till after winter to make her pay. Even thieves are victim to these high fuel bills. So shoot me, I'm a softy sometimes. Lets save our energy and courts on drunk drivers and such.

It seems possible to me that this woman was trying to get back a family pet, couldn't afford the animal shelter fee, so resorted to dog-napping. If that's the case, I'm sorry that the family lost their pet. But, it does seem like Freddie's found a good home ...

What this mother did was wrong. She was a poor example to her children. But, with that said, I don't think they should prosecute. It seems to me that more good then bad came from this because its something that got the animal shelter in the paper and that's good for this beagle and the other animals. Also, I don't trust the courts to handle this appropriately. They are so corrupt. Who knows how long they'll rip this family apart. If stealing animals becomes a regular problem at the shelter, then I can see becoming stricter. Those are just my thoughts.

What makes you say the courts are corrupt?

Please give some examples. Facts and citatations would be nice.

Remember a couple years ago when the people of our community came together with what, around 200 in attendance, at the Carlson Center to address our corrupt court system.

I saw this first hand in a child custody case involving my friend, and the father(who made more money) was able to take my friend's kids away from her and haul those kids to Kenai with no trial or defense. The judge just signed it off. He followed the money trail, not the rules. There was no care for the children's emotions or health, nothing. Just abused power.

I shared my experience. 4 people's lives were destroyed by the ruling of the judge's decision.

If you're concerned with our corrupt justice system, then attend the next public meeting. I'm sure you'll receive enough citations to write a book.
