BETHEL, Alaska - Alaska State Troopers say they have seized 2 pounds of marijuana in Bethel that was headed to villages in the region.

Troopers say a man was waiting at the Bethel airport for a flight to Emmonak earlier this month when he was found with the marijuana in his carry-on bag and three bottles of alcohol in his checked bag.

Troopers say drug enforcement officers contacted the man at the Bethel airport.

KYUK (http://bit.ly/vhRW3u ) says the marijuana has an estimated street value of more than $45,000.

Troopers have not released the man's name because charges including misconduct involving a controlled substance and alcohol importation are pending.

Drug Alcohol& Big Business

The government and the private sector love this drug! It keeps them all employed. Without it we might have to lay off Corrections officers, police officers, judges,DA's,public pretenders, and Detox centers API. Everyone gets a piece of the pie$$$$$

It should be legal for this guy to bring an herb into Bethel. If the people in the villages replace alcohol use with marijuana use, they'd all be better off and WAY more functional. Alcohol is a dangerous, addictive substance proven to cause devastation in communities. If people feel the need to use a mind-altering substance, marijuana is FAR LESS damaging to a community than alcohol. Problems won't magically disappear, but they'd be a hell of a lot easier to deal with.

Marijuana has been used by humans for thousands of years without the devastating, addictive, mind-altering effects of alcohol.

A survey was completed in the villages years ago which asked women if they would prefer their significant other drunk or stoned. 90% of them said "stoned". It's obvious why.

They need to learn how to grow their own, should be easy enough in desolate areas.

Now the locals will have to go back to huffing gas. It is still a cheap high for them. Troopers should be ashamed of this activity as it is unconstitutional, as well as chicken. But, maybe it will make their TV show.

I've heard rumors that the Department Of Transportation is responsible for a lot of illicit trafficking...

Gotta stomp out the competition...

Now that's funny! I can't believe you let the cat out of the bag. Why do you think that drug cartels know just where and when to cross the border, so that border patrol won't bother them. Drugs are a fund raiser, as well as gun sales, for our own Government. The CIA, is in the loop, unlike what their former director had to say about the Iran-Contra affair. Our immediate border with Mexico, is no different.

DD must not be from around here, sounds like a good estimated price to me. The price of alcohal goes up the farther north you go 500.00 a bottle.

When a case of beer can sell for $ 120 or a fifth of Jack for $ 100 in some villages I see no problem with the estimated $ 45 K.

Actually DD, if you've read the DNM long enough, you'd have read that a gram of Marijuana can go as high as $100 in some of the villages. $45k seems about right. Not that the DNM is an authority on drug prices around the state but here in squarebanks, I have been offered (declined, don't partake) a quarter ounce at a bar for a measly $140. Thats about $4500 for 2 pounds. Quite the mark up eh? (I don't frequent that bar anymore - too many druggies).

2 pounds of marijuana ESTIMATED at $45,000, thats over $1400 per ounce....who's kidding who? Sure hope the "squirrels" don't eat it all up like was alledged by the FPD when they had a large ammount of drugs go missing from the evidence locker in Fairbanks some years back. Them "squirrels" just want to get high.....
