It's that time of year again for New Year's resolutions. The old standards include losing half my body weight, running a marathon, donating plasma every month, quitting smoking, drinking, chocolate or caffeine. What about the other things?
Trying to be kind to those who despise the fact that we are breathing air and taking up space. Ignoring those who attack us anonymously from a faceless computer half way across the country or next door. Suppressing the urge to kill the neighbor's cat who insists on using my garden as one huge litter box all summer long. Remembering that the moron tailgating me isn't specifically targeting me for his exhaust pipe hugging antics but that he tailgates everyone. Thanking check out clerks by name and looking them in the eye as they had me my change. Remembering to tell the people who touch my life that they do make a difference in my world. Praying for peace even as we stand poised to throw nuclear mud balls at each other.
And perhaps the most important is to continue spreading the magic of Christmas all year long. To look beyond a person's outer shell to see the good inside whether they are rude or holding a cardboard sign at an intersection begging for help. And continue praying for peace even though the differences between us seem much bigger than our similarities.
Happy New Year all. May your year be filled with peace, love and joy.
