For the last 31 months, Kentucky artist Bill Guffey selected cities across the world to use as the subject for a virtual paintout project. The concept is simple — find an image on Google street view, paint the scene and submit it to the paintout’s website.
For August, Guffey selected Fairbanks.
“I've wanted to do a month in Alaska for a while now,” Guffey said via email. “After 31 months there are still plenty of places to visit, but none quite as beautiful as Alaska.”
Artists scan the city for images they translate into art. Some places are easily recognizable, like Julie Manning’s sketch of the Masonic Temple on First Avenue. Others are not. Guffey said he randomly encountered the street view image of his oil painting “March of the Wheelbarrows.”
So far 14 artists have submitted art, ranging from water color and oil paints to pencil sketches. Guffey said the site receives up to 130 images a month, but expects about 100 for Fairbanks.
