FAIRBANKS - Get ready, Fairbanks, because our favorite sleazy waterfront bar is turning 42.

The Boatel — it really is dubbed a “sleazy waterfront bar” according to the plaque inside — is hosting its annual birthday bash Saturday with a day full of live music, food, drinks, games and shenanigans, all in The Boatel’s backyard along the Chena River. The birthday bash celebrates 42 years since Jon and Annie Neubauer began running the Boat, as its patrons call it.

Live music runs 1:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. with Kentucky Tundra taking the stage first, followed by Back Acres, Shag, Burnt Orange and Wet Thunder. Drink service will be offered outside along with Bad 2 The Bone barbecue serving food for purchase. Commemorative birthday T-shirts will be available for purchase.

If you’ve ever been to the Boat, especially on a sunny Fairbanks summer day, you know what to expect — a great night of beer, music, friends and good times with a few shenanigans thrown in. If you haven’t been to the Boat, hang on. You’re in for a ride you won’t forget.

The Boat is located at 3368 Riverside Drive along the Chena River. Ages 21 and up. Call 479-6537 for information.
