Here is a request from Nancy Katkin of the borough parks and rec department to help the community campaign to get the 2014 Arctic Winter Games held in Fairbanks.

She writes:

We must have 2,300 neck warmers sewn by January 10th! (Yes, you read that correctly.)

Allow me to explain:

As you may know, Fairbanks is bidding on the 2014 Arctic Winter Games, and the International Committee is coming to town on January 11, 2011 to tour our community and decide whether or not to award the Games to us.

So, the Fairbanks Bid Organizing Committee is going to hold a community event at the Big Dipper to show the International Committee just how excited we are to have the Games here in Fairbanks.

During the event, we will be giving away free neck warmers to all the residents that show up. The neck warmers will be made of the three Arctic Winter Games’ colors so that the crowd will be bubbling over in vibrant AWG color.

So, to this end, we’re going to hold a sewing party at the Ken Kunkel Community Center in Goldstream Valley Park at 2 p.m. this Friday.

Please join us, if you have time!

Or, if you prefer, you can hold a party of your own. Or, if you’d rather, you can adopt a bolt of fleece, bring it home, and sew at your or your friends’ leisure.

I certainly understand if you don’t have time to spend doing a project like this at this time of year, or are less than an expert at sewing (like me).

However, just passing the word would be very helpful too.

If you know of someone that would be interested in helping us out—maybe a former Arctic Winter Games athlete or parent?—then, please forward this message to them.

Heck, even if you can only drop by the Big Dipper on Wednesday, January 12th from 4:30 p.m. to   7 p.m. to enjoy the festivities, give-a-ways, and youth exhibition hockey game, that would be great too!

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me. My cell is: (305) 409-3609.Thanks so much for considering my crazy request. Here’s hoping you have had a warm and wonderful holiday season, too!
