FAIRBANKS - A winter storm packing heavy snow and 35 mph winds is making conditions treacherous through Atigun Pass in northern Alaska.

Blowing and drifting snow, and reduced visibility have made driving conditions very slick and difficult.

Travel through the 4,739-foot pass through the Brooks Range is not advised, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation. Avalanche danger is high.

This advisory will remain in effect for 48 hours.

Farther south in Alaska, a travel advisory has been issued for the Richardson Highway between Eielson Air Force Base and Shaw Creek due to black ice on the road. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep an eye out for workers and keep their headlights on.
