Letter to the Editor

Dec. 24, 2012

To the editor:

I am surprised and embarrassed that the Daily News-Miner published a letter to the editor (Dec. 24) filled with anti-gun nonsense and actually insulted the paper at the same time.

First of all, it always is the lunatics with mental issues that seem to be committing gun crimes, and for some reason, the tool is blamed.

Second, “assault weapons” are heavily restricted and regulated and are called class III firearms. AR-15s have been under a tremendous amount of scrutiny lately for being “assault weapons.” This is not true; only the military versions — the M16 or M4 — are class III weapons. To be an assault weapon, the firearm must have a selectable fire switch to operate in full automatic, burst or single fire modes. It is worth mentioning that a gun crime has not been committed with a legally owned class III firearm since the ’80s.

The letter also mentioned “ridiculous weapons” having large-capacity magazines. It should be noted that a 30-round magazine for an AR-15 is standard (since the ’60s), not an aftermarket “high capacity” magazine.

Perhaps the lady who wrote also should know that as gun ownership increases, gun crime is decreasing.

I’m just getting tired of hearing about people like this reader who are trying to get rid of my rights before I’m 21 years old. Just remember one thing; if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
