Dec. 21, 2012
To the editor:
It’s Friday, Dec. 21. The world did not end, but we now have the promised message from the NRA regarding their proposal to keep our schools safe and to avoid future tragedies as the Newtown slaughter.
They say all schools should be required to have armed guards to provide protection for our precious children and teachers. Will this be enough protection? We know movie theaters can be dangerous. What about our safety in the box stores, supermarkets, libraries, public meetings and, don’t forget, churches?
All this protection will be expensive, but surely there are armed volunteers who will step up to spare public funds. Never mind the experience in Florida with a trigger-happy neighborhood watch volunteer.
Is it the American dream that every citizen have the right to bear assault weapons because the best defense against evil doers is a bigger gun? Guess “Star Wars” got it right — may the force be with you.
