Snowy Ski

Freshly fallen snow accumulates on tree branches as a skier crosses Ballaine Lake in the background Monday afternoon, December 2, 2019.

It's been a mild winter so far in Interior Alaska, but the mercury is about to drop.

Temperatures tonight are expected to fall to about minus 18, according to the National Weather Service, then plummet to minus 27 on Wednesday night. It's the first seriously cold weather of the season, but nothing unusual in a typical Fairbanks winter. Normal high is 6 above, and normal low is minus 11.

The chill is expected to last through Thursday, but then temperatures will rebound to the teens above zero. In the meantime, don't forget to dig out your parka and an extension cord for the car.
