Fire crews battled a large structure fire off Geist Road on Monday.

An alert from Alaska State Troopers at 5:28 a.m. advised residents to avoid the area of Geist and Fairbanks Street because of fire and police activity. A photo taken from the National Weather Service offices at the University of Alaska Fairbanks showed a large structure burning.

A video from the scene shows flames coming from The College Inn at 700 Fairbanks St. The inn had been closed to business for some time.

A large smoke plume was still visible two hours later. Fire crews continued working through the afternoon.

Mary Beth Perreault, who lives near the inn, said that the sirens awakened her and she could see the flames through her window.

“They did a good job of controlling it,” she said of firefighters, noting that the nearby Holiday gas station and a condo complex seemed to be unscathed by the flames.
