JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - The Alaska Air National Guard says 54 airmen are returning home from Afghanistan.

The guard says in a release that the airmen were mostly maintenance crew members from the 176th Wing's maintenance group and three rescue units. They deployed last May.

The airmen provided combat search and rescue operations.

The airmen will arrive Thursday afternoon at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

The guard says another 86 guardsmen will return within the next week.
