FAIRBANKS - The Fairbanks North Star Borough has issued an air quality alert for the North Pole area due to "unhealthy" levels of fine particulate pollution. Air quality for the Fairbanks area is also expected to degrade to unhealthy levels, officials said Thursday.

People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children should avoid prolonged exertion and others should limit prolonged exertion.

Weather conditions are allowing little to no dispersion of pollutants in the area and the air quality is forecast to remain 'unhealthy' through Friday afternoon. Conditions may improve slightly during daylight hours.

For more information, visit the borough's website and select the air quality link or call 459-1312 during business hours.
