FAIRBANKS—Nearly 150 skiers turned out Friday to burn off a little Thanksgiving energy and complete in the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks 47th annual Turkey Day Relays at Birch Hill Recreation Area.

Skiers from kindergarten to those well into their 60s turned out to test their skills on the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails at distances of 1 to 5 kilometers in the race sponsored by Beaver Sports.

Each relay team was comprised of three racers, with the youngest skiers going 1 kilometer, most elementary and junior skiers going 2K and the high school and adult racers covering 5 kilometers.

Each team also had to come up with a name for itself in order to compete.

The Open Men/Mixed Class drew the largest number of teams and was the most competitive division, as International Men & Woman of Mystery edged NGT by 4.4 seconds.

Peter Leonard, Leschinska Grimmer and Jim Button comprised the winning team, finishing in 42 minutes, 31.2 seconds, while Patrick Nugent, Nicholas Grimmer and Neill Toelle earned the runner-up sport in 42:35.6.

Third place went to Two Fast and Too Old (Kuba Grzeda, Roger Sayre and Mikko Sayre) in 43:54.9.

There were 10 teams in the division.

There were six teams in the high school boys/mixed division won by the Nordic Nudes (Riley Troyer, Jonathan Koenig and Max Donaldson) in 40:36.1. The Lord of the Pies (Sam Hiltenbrand, Jesse Mayo and Tristan Sayre) took the runner-up in 43:29.3.

The leadoff led was most exciting with the top three finishers tagging their teammates one second apart. Leonard was first in 12:53.1, followed by Nugent and Troyer.

Roger Sayre had the fastest time of all skiers who did the second leg, posting a 14:28.7, followed by Koenig in 14:36.5 and David Swenson in 14:41.6.

Donaldson had the fastest time of an of the 31 anchor leg skiers, completing the 5K course in 13:05.4, Toelle was second in 13:14.2 and Erich Hoefler was third in 13:4.2

The fifth and sixth grade classes had to most skiers in the younger age groups.

Goin’ Cold Turkey (Eloise Darrow, Tjarn Bross and Emma Jerome) won the girls 3x2K race in 26:50.4.

In the boys/mixed division, the Colorado Connection (Ari Endestad, Wyatt Sutter and Dam Delamore), notched a winning time of 23:54.2.
